Chris Smith is an executive with more than 30 years’ experience in the health care sector. He is known for developing high-performing, results oriented teams that drive sales growth, and margin improvement, while enhancing customer, partner and shareholder value. His experience leading complex multinational businesses and cross-cultural organizational change, gives Chris extensive global and diverse operating experience.
Chris recently retired as CEO of Cochlear Limited, an ASX-listed company and global market leader in implantable hearing solutions with over $1.2 billion in annual revenue. Together, the more than 3500 global team mates, serve the needs of customers and patients in more than 100 countries. While CEO, Smith has led a strategy focused on customer experience, globalization, service expansion and product innovation, consistently achieving double-digit revenue growth.
The heart of Chris’ approach has been a relentless focus on customers and global commercial optimization. Under his leadership, Cochlear expanded both its emerging market footprint and global customer-facing teams; implementing targeted professional and consumer engagement through both digital and traditional platforms.
Smith guided the investment of more than 12% of Cochlear’s revenue in research and development to drive innovation and maintain market leadership with specific focus on new therapies, expanding indications and enhancing clinical outcomes for patients.
Chris lives in Denver, Colorado with his wife and two children; enjoys playing tennis, basketball, and coaching youth sports, and is a Board of Trustee for Valor High School. He graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree.
He has been a Board member of both public and private companies including; Cochlear Limited & UBI, (ASX-listed); Startek & Xtent (NASDAQ); Gyrus Group Plc. (LSE listed) and Acclarent.
