Mr. Burgess is the VP Technology & Space of Sierra Nevada Corp Space and Systems Group, joining the firm in 2013. He is responsible for technology strategy, driving excellence in program execution, and strategy for entering new markets. He contributed significantly to SNC’s recent win of the NASA CRS2 contract for taking cargo to the International Space Station.
Prior to coming to SNC, Burgess served as Chief Technology Officer for the Laserlight Communications startup in Virginia, a commercial 8-satellite high bandwidth laser communications system. Prior to Laserlight, he was a senior vice president at Orbital Sciences Corporation in Virginia. Mr. Burgess developed and led the National Security Space division with $250M annual revenue. Mr. Burgess began his 31 year career in aerospace systems at Hughes Aircraft Company, and has been working with the US National Security Space community since 1989.
Mr. Burgess holds MS and BS degrees from MIT in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering, and the General Manager’s Program (GMP) certificate at Harvard Business School. He is a general technical executive, with expertise in general management, corporate strategy, business development, program management, and aerospace systems engineering. He is an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), and serves on the boards of the CU Boulder Aerospace Engineering Sciences department and the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC).
